What's the deal with the commenting system on Valleywag?

The usual boxy system is completely abandoned, and replies aren't necessarily displayed below the comment to which they are replying. Seems like a step backwards to me.

I literally cannot figure out how to use it. I cannot view replies at all...how do I do that? It reminds me of the old old system, and I kind of like it...but I can't fucking use it.
